Primary Uses:

Methemoglobinemia (drug of choice)

• Converts methemoglobin (which cannot carry oxygen) back to hemoglobin

Ifosfamide-induced encephalopathy

• Used off-label as an antidote to neurotoxicity caused by the chemotherapy drug ifosfamide

Septic shock (vasoplegia)

• Occasionally used to counter vasodilatory shock unresponsive to vasopressors

Urinary tract visualization and surgical staining

• Used as a diagnostic dye

• Treatment of severe or complicated malaria when oral therapy is not feasible

• Often used when rapid therapeutic levels are needed

• Sometimes used for babesiosis or other parasitic infections (less common)

• To facilitate cervical dilation during labor by relaxing the smooth muscles of the cervix and uterus

• Helps in shortening the first stage of labor
